When undertaking a home renovation project, every little detail matters. As the saying goes, "the devil is in the details." A recent experience in our renovation project reinforced the significance of this adage.

The Costly Oversight

During a recent siding project, a mishap occurred that led to unnecessary delays and additional expenses. Although the correct color and size of the siding material were ordered, the profile was overlooked. Instead of the double four-inch dutch lap panel that was needed, a double four-inch panel was ordered.

This oversight might seem minor to the untrained eye, but in the world of home renovation, such a mistake can be costly both in time and money. It's not just about aesthetics; it's about ensuring the materials fit seamlessly and serve their functional purpose.

The Cascade of Errors

Despite the error, there were multiple opportunities to identify and rectify it. For starters, a sample was ordered and installed on the client's house to ensure a good match. Yet, this discrepancy went unnoticed. When the siding crew arrived, they proceeded to tear down the old siding without verifying the new material, amplifying the magnitude of the oversight.

Moreover, even a visit to the site by the supervisor, yours truly, failed to catch the mistake. In hindsight, simply checking the box could have prevented the whole fiasco. Unfortunately, the entire house was sided before realizing the error. The baffling part? No one noticed the difference in profile even when juxtaposed against the existing siding.
